Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies
Overview: The Complete Course of Study
The Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies (SSBS) is a systematic four-cycle program of practice and study taught at all Shambhala Centers internationally to educate practitioners who want to understand the Shambhala Buddhist tradition. You may take one or all the classes, as suits your needs. The curriculum includes a two year rotation of classes on topics from the Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions, and prepares students for Sutrayana Seminary, if they desire to take their study and practice further. If attending Sutrayana Seminary is your goal, you must complete the four-cycles of Buddhist study, as well as Levels I-V of Shambhala Training, and attend a dathün.
All classes involve buying a class text, require homework, and have a final exam. You may start at any time and with any class, and each cycle provides:
- weekly classes as well as one-day, two-day, and weekend intensives
- courses in each of the three yanas
- community practice intensives
- teachings of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Pema Chödrön and other teachers
- a central transmission and contemplation
